The pastor had a small kitten that climbed up a tree in his backyard and became too frightened to come down.
He tried coaxing it with treats, calling its name, and even offering a bowl of warm milk, but the kitten just stayed stuck in the tree, looking down with wide eyes.
After a while, the pastor realized the tree was too flimsy to climb.
He had an idea: if he tied a rope to his car, he could pull it towards the tree, bending it enough to reach the kitten.
He carefully attached the rope, got into his car, and began to slowly drive forward, checking the progress as the tree started to bend.
Just when he thought the tree was close enough, he moved the car a little further, but the rope snapped.
The tree sprang back with a loud “boing!” and the kitten, startled, flew through the air and disappeared from sight.
The pastor was horrified. He searched the neighborhood, asking everyone if they had seen a cat, but no one had.
Feeling terrible, he said a prayer, “Lord, I commit this kitten to Your care,” and continued with his day.
A few days later, while at the grocery store, the pastor ran into one of his church members.
As they chatted, his eyes were drawn to her shopping cart, where he saw a few cans of cat food.
This woman was known for her dislike of cats, so he asked, “Why on earth are you buying cat food?”
She looked at him with a smile and said, “You won’t believe this, but my daughter has been begging for a cat for weeks. I kept saying no, but then a few days ago, she asked again. I told her, ‘If God gives you a cat, you can keep it.’”
The woman continued, “I watched as she went into the yard, knelt down, and prayed for a cat. And, Pastor, you won’t believe what happened next—this kitten suddenly came flying from the sky, paws outstretched, and landed right in front of her!”
The pastor was speechless.
Moral of the story: Never underestimate the power of prayer—and God’s sense of humor.
