I stopped at a fast-food restaurant recently.

I stopped in my tracks.

Fat-free? French fries? It sounded like witchcraft. Or marketing magic. Either way, I was intrigued.

Curiosity overpowered skepticism. I stepped up to the counter, placed my order, and, with a raised brow and a hopeful heart, added, “I’ll try the fat-free fries.”

The clerk, a young man nodded silently. I watched as he turned to the fryer behind him, lifted a wire basket bubbling in oil, and gave it a perfunctory shake. Golden fries—crispy, shimmering, and unmistakably soaked in grease—dripped as he poured them into a bag.

Something didn’t feel right. He placed them in my tray with all the ceremony of someone handing over precious treasure, but my stomach churned—not from hunger now, but confusion.

“Wait a minute,” I said, raising a hand. “Those aren’t fat-free.”

He looked at me with an earnest expression, as if I were the one missing something obvious. Then, deadpan and without a hint of irony, he replied:

“Oh, they are. We only charge you for the potatoes… the fat is free.”

A 10-point buck walked into a lodge restaurant and ordered a burger and fries.

After the deer finished and was paying, the cashier said, “We don’t see too many deer around here.”

“At these prices,” replied the buck, “I’m not surprised.”
